Second Wave: Or Still The First?
Covid-19 is still making the news. A huge percentage of the British population is enduring a second lockdown, and President Trump has gone into hospital for treatment.
They are now talking up the ‘second wave’. Is it any wonder, when the bars and pubs opened here, and we were treated to videos of groups of (mainly young) people enjoying parties and fun-filled gatherings? Or when Mr Trump thought it was okay to have a presentation in the Rose Garden with nobody wearing masks, and all of the cuddling or chatting close together. Or when the schools were forced back, resulting in large numbers of infections almost immediately.
Then we have the various conspiracy theorists who claim it doesn’t exist, or if it does, it is not that serious. Yes, more people still die from cancer, heart attacks, and even road fatalaties all over the world. But is this a reason to blatantly ignore the advice of medical professionals, or to overturn the hard work of so many medical staff since January?
I doubt this is a second wave, as the first wave never went away. We now have the winter flu season to deal with, when so many people will have the symptoms associated with Covid-19. That will mean more demand for testing, and possibly more deaths being counted as Coronavirus related.
So please stay safe. Carry on abiding by the commonsense rules not to spread the virus, or contract it. And above all, don’t believe it isn’t real.
(This post was created using the new block Editor. I was unable to work out how to insert any images, but wil use this blog to try to learn how to use this pesky, hateful thing!)
As a Norwegian comrade put it, the leader of the ‘free world’ (USA) is now a failed state.

I have thought that for decades, but Trump has made it a reality.

Hello Pete, a long delay in reading and commenting … am in the rural parts of Thuringia (Germany), having escaped from the small-mindedness of Australia. Stay well in these new dark ages

Hi, Roland. Great to hear from you, I was wondering what had happened. I had never thought of Thuringia as very progressive, but I hope you find peace there.
Best wishes, Pete.

A very dark wave is here, Pete. It’s a struggle to stay positive. THE USA is heading into something horrific.

Sad but true. And no doubt we will be hanging on your coat-tails eventually.

As you have said all along Pete, this is going to go on for a long time with world changing consequences. I’m going to buy a third freezer and a bigger generator š

I think that’s very sensible. But don’t start digging the underground bunker just yet. š

The economic impact is going to follow the medical one. There are all the indications of a ‘perfect storm’ of worldwide economic collapse. Gloomy indeed.
Best wishes, Pete.

It is hard to get away from the doom and gloom now, we are collectively in a downward spiral, no escape. Just do your best to survive. So there, that’s me being cheery š

If you feel like that, things must be bad!

It’s a mess Pete. I’ve just been chatting to my son in Queensland. They still have their borders closed to other states, but cases are only 3. Life is almost back to normal within the state, but he’s only working 2 days a week. It’s tough for the youngsters.

Watching the news, it does seem that younger people are more affected economically. But they were also responsible (and still are here) for flouting so many of the safeguards and rules. If they don’t get on board with the restrictions, it is never going to calm down.
Best wishes, Pete.

We want it to go away, but we refuse to take systematic action to accomplish that. I get out and wear a mask. I minimize my outings and won’t even get out to take a picture if there are people around without masks. I can not say that the number of people and traffic resembles a pandemic. It resembles the time before the pandemic. So, we are definitely stringing out this infection to keep it around as long as we can. That is a piss poor strategy. I think a discussion of waves, falls into the psychology that results in keeping the pandemic going. It will be over when we have proper means of preventing it and curing it, not before. However, we can minimize its spread and the resulting deaths if we just use common senes (but then I forget, we are humans š¦ ). Warmest regards, Theo

Well said, Theo. Human nature is the factor that keeps it increasing.

Yes, the entertainment and hospitality industries are unlikely to recover in a decade.

Iām going out on a limb here and saying the U.S. is definitely still in the first wave. Just wait for an additional explosion of cases in starting in the next few weeks.

I think it’s the first wave everywhere. Those ‘dips and recoveries’ didn’t last long.
Best wishes, Pete.

I am certain we are in for a major depression, both economic and psychological. Here it is definitely still the first wave.

The economic depression is starting to rear its head here. Just the tip of an iceberg, I fear.

We are responsible for our own health and on our own Pete. No help for the out of work here. Airlines will lay off thousands soon. Foreclosures and evictions are on the horizon. I fear the worst is yet to come. Stay well.

Almost certainly the worst is to come. Today the largest cinema chain here closed, 5,000 jobs gone in moments. Just the start of an unemployment landslide.
Best wishes, Pete.
