Orlando: The wrong response.

I make no apology for returning to the recent mass killing in Florida. Surely there has been no better time for the American people to take a real stand against their archaic gun laws? This is an election year, and a unified public could organise sufficient outrage to demand that any potential president promises to finally take on the powerful gun lobby over there. The normally outspoken Gay Community has protested at the scene in the form of a vigil, but the response from almost everyone concerned is still the wrong response. Instead of lamenting attacks against any community or group, all the people in America should be asking how the attacker/s got the weapons in the first place.
They don’t ask this, because they already know the answer. They should be relentless in their outrage, but they are not. Because they still want to be able to buy guns.

This from Bernie Sanders, who is believed by some people to be a ‘Socialist.’
“I believe that in this country, we should not be selling automatic weapons which are designed to kill people,” Sanders said, according to an emailed statement from NBC. “We have got to do everything that we can on top of that to make sure that guns do not fall into the hands of people who should not have them, criminals, people who are mentally ill.”
You don’t need automatic weapons to kill people, Mr Sanders. Single-shot weapons will do the same job, and just have to be reloaded, or carried in sufficient numbers. The shooter was not a criminal, and was almost certainly not mentally ill. He was a US citizen, and according to which report you believe, was either homophobic, or a radicalised Islamist. So how would you have prevented him being entitled to buy a gun?

And Hilary Clinton, the person most likely to become the next president.
“It’s essential that we stop terrorists from getting the tools they need to carry out the attacks, and that is especially true when it comes to assault weapons like those used in Orlando and San Bernardino,”
She fails to address the fact that everyone who is not a ‘terrorist’ will still be able to legally buy guns under her administration. I doubt that any gun buyer who is actually a terrorist will volunteer this information, so it will be interesting to know how she intends to carry out the promise in her statement.

What about Donald Trump? You could probably have guessed.
“When I am elected, I will suspend immigration from areas of the world when there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies, until we understand how to end these threats.” “We are importing Radical Islamic Terrorism into the West through a failed immigration system —and through an intelligence community held back by our president. Even our own FBI Director has admitted that we cannot effectively check the backgrounds of the people we are letting into America.”
He carefully avoids the fact that most mass killings in American history have been carried out by white men, born and raised in that country. Immigration control is not the answer. Banning the sale of guns to individuals is the only way to stop it.

If the good people of the USA sit back and wait for the next mass killing, or hear about it on the car radio as they drive to the shooting range, or gun shop, they only have themselves to blame.

Oh my I could really get knee deep into this discussion… But, air on calm right now.. why on earth can’t we all just be people? Allowed to live the life we choose to live in happiness and peace.. Why must the powers at be look the other way when automatic guns are allowed to anyone who wants them.. I live in Canada first by marrying a Canadian then by choice after becoming a widow.. it’s safer to live here and a good place to raise children.. I would never move back to the states which I left over 30 years ago… but, I retain my American citizenship and proud of it.. Even if I’m 100% Mexican Mr. Donald Trump.. you know what he can do right! Oh well not so calm after all.. oh how I love this blog of yours.. a place for shooting from the hip chat..

    Take care, Laura

Glad you like it, Laura. We lost a female MP to a shooting incident in Yorkshire today. The killer was a deranged loner with a pistol which was described as ‘antique’, or ‘home made.’ Still tragic, but only one person was killed, not 49.
      Best wishes, Pete.

    I found this on the internet recently. It points up the differing attitudes to women’s rights and the gun lobby’s rights;

“How about we treat every young man who wants to buy a gun like every woman who wants to get an abortion mandatory 48-hr waiting period, parental permission, a note from his doctor proving he understands what he’s about to do, a video he has to watch about the effects of gun violence, and an ultrasound wand up the ass (just because).

“Let’s close down all but one gun shop in every state and make him travel hundreds of miles, take time off work, and stay overnight in a strange town to get a gun. Make him walk through a gauntlet of people holding photos of loved ones who were shot to death people who call him a murderer and beg him not to buy a gun. It makes more sense to do this with young men and guns than with women and health care, right?

“I mean, no woman getting an abortion has killed a room full of people in seconds, right?”

The gun industry in the US makes billions. Gun ownership in America is fueled by an embarrassingly ridiculous level of machismo, jingoism and hysterical fear. Many Americans think that gun ownership makes them free, but it really makes them slaves.

For example, when that clown Joe the Plumber’s wife supposedly received a threatening phone call he said that in response he did what any real man would do, he went out and bought ANOTHER gun.

None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free. – Goethe

No one is a criminal until they are. No one is a terrorist until they actually commit a terrorist act. As long as guns are available to the general public it will be impossible to keep them out of the hands of potential criminals and so-called terrorists (I hate that term, by the way).
